Atypical antipsychotics

Because of the greater risk of side effects, particularly dystonic reactions in adolescents most people have enthusiastically changed to the atypical anti-psychotics (risperidone, olanzepine etc) because of a belief that they are less toxic in this way. However, balancing this is the increased risk of weight gain and in particular Type 2 diabetes.

There is increasing evidence that the newer anti-psychotics offer no significant advantage over their older cheaper predecessors (haloperidol, etc).

There is no unequivocal right answer.  It is currently a case of matching the side effect profile with the patients needs.
