How to refer to CAMHS

See below for contact details for your local CAMHS team.

Referral works best when you

  1. Indicate why you are worried about this particular patient,

eg, 'I couldn't work out what was bugging this young woman, but she seems very self-destructive, has sat staring at a rope for ages, and I don't think she is safe'

  2. Pose a specific question,

eg, 'does this child need a specialised programme and/or medication for his OCD?'

  3. Say where you fit in,

eg, 'I'd like to keep working with her' or

'I am out of my depth, and don't know her well, so don't see an ongoing role for myself'

Don't forget to confirm to CAMHS that you have the patient/parent's consent to make the referral.

You might want to add a closing paragraph like, 'Please inform me when the patient will be seen, and of the outcome of your assessment' or alternatively, 'I would like to be involved in the shared care and management of this patient'.
